3月27日 My testimony (IELTS)Hello! Everyone
I copied this testimony from my mail, so some of you have read it before. However, this time I've corrected some grammar mistakes but it still remained relatively unchanged. ^_^ (if u find my mistakes, pls feel free to give me some comments. It will be helpful for me. ^_^)
I've passed my IELTS exam. 5555 I've got overall score of 7 out of 9, with Listening 7, Reading 7.5, Writing 7 and Speaking 7. Oh! Incredible scores. 55555 God has blessed me so much.
I took this test last month (on 3 February) and at that time I got only 6 out of 9 in the overall score of IELTS test, with listening & reading 6.5, writing barely 5 and speaking 6. The minimum requirement of study in a university in Australia is overall score of 6.5 and writing must be 6. I was really desperate; however, I've put in a lot of effort to improve my writing skills. Thanks God because he's shown me the weakest points in some particular problems. Then I've reviewed my previous lessons as much as I can. On the exam day (10 March), I wasn't sure whether I could pass. When I did the listening and reading tests, I felt that they were quite easy for me. However, I'd expected that the most difficult challenge was waiting for me, writing tests. There are two tasks for the test. Task 2 is more important than the task 1, so I chose to write task 2 and 1 respectively. After the intensive test was a lunch break, I didn't have a real rest because I was really worried about it. However, I thought I dealt with the first task better than last time. (Thanks God about that) ^_^
When time went by, I took the last part of my exam, speaking test. I was neither so confident nor excited.
In fact, I'd not expected to get a high score in a speaking test which has three parts. The examiner looked pretty kind and she asked me some questions for the first part. I was inquired to talk two topics. The firt one was about weather which I was not familiar with. I thought I did not answer well. Nevertheless, thanks God, the another topic was about a language which I'd prepared some vocabularies. For example, "why do u choose to study English?", asked the examiner and I replied " I chose to study English becasue it will enhance my career prospects." Another question was "Do you think you are a good language learner?", asked the examiner and I answered that I should say that I am not a good learner because I am an introvert person and I don't like speaking English. However, I try to improve my listening and reading skills instead.
After the first part of the test finished, we turned into the second part, long turn speaking which I was required to speak alone with the chosen topic from the examiner. I felt no fear or exciting either because I didn't expect to achieve the high score. 55555 When I finished my talk, the examiner discussed some abstract questions with me. I answered the questions with the simple vocabularies and I was surprised when she used a range of adjectives which I should have said but I didn't. At the end of the day I felt desperate again. I prayed to God that I was wondering whether or not study in Australia is your will. I was in trouble with my depression. I tried to smile and give thanks to him but I couldn't do anything. The only thing I could do at that time was to stay calm with no tears. My christian friends asked me about the exam and I replied that it was not too bad. :( In fact, I thanked God for the easier parts, listening and reading, but what I was concerned was about the writing module. As I mentioned before I could not study in the university if the band of writing score is lower than 6. Also, I was worried about the overall score if it reached 6.5.
Last Tuesday the church held the prayer meeting in which I regularly participate. During the prayer a pastor sensed that God would like to drive the doubtful hearts out of us. "Pls feel free to offer yourself unto God and keep perseverance to believe in God", said the pastor. He continued to encourage, no matter how difficult the circumstances were, trusted in him. Consequently, I responded by standing in front of the stage and received some prayers. The day after the prayer meeting I still had doubts but I kept praying to God. I considered myself as a dead man. Only miracle from God could resurrect me. I know that my friends were praying for me. Thanks for that . ^_^ However, I 've plotted the alternative plans in case of failure but I have no longer ambition or attention to handle them.
I finished my English study on last Friday which I could collect my result. I walked to receive it with depression, mumbling to God on the way. Indeed, I'd prepared my mind to handle the disappiontment so that I would not give God my complaints. Unexpectedly, I opened the form and I've got overall 7.0 out of 9, with 7 in writing and speaking. I was shocked but I didn't act any kind of excitement. I didn't know where I should go first but I knew that my classmates were somewhere. Therefore, I went there and met one of my classmates. She asked me what about my results. Suddenly, I demonstrated the exciting actions I've never thought that I would do. Like a football player when he kicked the ball into the goal, he would manifest the extremely happiest actions. Afterwards, I kept going on to my friends and they all congratulated me. They know that I am not an extrovert person (talkative, cheerful or etc.) and they said they were proud of me. Thanks God. Only him that I could say.
I realized that I've put all of my strengths to shift the level of English abilities to higher but with my human power I could not cross the line. By God's grace I've learnt to humble and put my confidence in him, not myself. When I looked back, I found that he was shaping me in faith and godly characters as well. God has reminded me in Mk. (I could not remember the certain word) "for man is impossible but everything is possible in God". I believe in that scripture but I prayed to God that I couldn't increase my faith, God, pls help me to unleash my faith.
Finally, I hope that my experiences will encourage you in some ways. He is the faithful and trustworthy God. If you have dobuts, pls don't hesitate to ask him to get rid them of, and then you'll soar higher by his power of love and mercy like an eagle. I don't have any words to say unless "Thanks God". Everything I have to do will honor you forever.
May God bless,
chim 3月17日 Let me explain the pictures^_^ Hi! everyone! ^_^ : As I mentioned the topic, let me clarify the exact meaning of these pics. ^_^
The roma street parkland's pictures were taken by me on last Saturday, 10 March. I took these pics during the lunch break. Actually, I was very stressed from the morning tests. I had to wait to take a speaking test at 3.40 pm, so I had plenty of times to relax. ^_^
While I was walking in the roma street parkland, I noticed that the garden was decorated well, with several flowers and green plants. I thought that it maybe as beautiful as Thai's botanic garden. That's why I took these photos. ^_^
For the next album, I and my friends organized the memorable BBQ together, with the Korean style. All of us had a happy time and talked to each other so much. It would be the most interesting activity that we've had together. ^_^ 3月10日 The long journey is ending soon. (cont.)Hello! guys! ^_^ I'm back.
May I start my blog with my test which I took today? I guess I can. 55555555 Thanks God for the pretty nice day. 555555 I think I did my best on all of tasks. I really disappointed the writing tasks again. :( I could not finish task1 within the time limit, with no more than 100 words (I guess); however, it should be alright because the weakest points may become the strongest point if I do not give up. 55555
Also, I wanna thanks God for the reading part, which I think I did the best. ^_^
Let me continue the language acquisition tips. ^_^ (If some of you find my flaws, pls don't hesitate to correct for me. It would be great ^_^)
2. Reading : We should set our aims before we start reading. We should ask ourselves why I need to improve these skills. Is it important in our normal life? Am I willing to discipline myself to practice everday? If you say "yes", let's do it; however, if you just wanna read and don't practice, that's ok. ^_^
2.1 Reading for comprehension skill. In this section, you may be required to understand lots of vocabularies, but don't look up every word you don't know, wasting our time. I recommend to pay attention to read through one article in time limit. From BBC learning English, for example, you can read online news for free and learn new expressions. (http://www.bbc.co.uk/worldservice/learningenglish/)
Some friends suggest me to read newspaper; however, personally, I don't agree with it due to lots of informal languages and too many unnecessary vocabs. I used to read Bangkok Post or Student weekly, but I finally gave up because I found it was very boring. However, you may disagree with me. That's fine. When you finish the short article, you should ask yourself what is the main idea. Who are mentioned in the article and what they do, for example.
I think this skill require the ability to identify main idea and some details. You may be aware of the parallel expressions if you do some questions. For example, "the scientists found the causes of the existence of the wild buffalos" and I said " every wild buffalos had already completely disappeared in the world today." The question is "Is my statement true or false or not given"
If I said "the scientists didn't know exact reasons why the wild buffalos had gone." , with the same question. What do you think? This is a few example to help you be aware the accurate meaning.
2.2 Reading for increase of the speed. You should pick the level 5 or 6 for the graded book, reading 5 pages daily or even bible is also acceptable.
2.3 Read it aloud, don't keep quiet.
2.4 If you need to understand new vocabs, pls take notes on your books. Draw a table , vocabs, possible word forms, meaning from English dictionary (don't use Thai unless you really don't understand) and make your sentences. Don't select every word but check the frequency from this website : "http://www.edict.com.hk/lexiconindex/frequencylists/words2000.htm".
2.5 Read everyday. Don't give up easily. 5555
I'll come back again. ^_^
Chim
P.S. Thanks for all comments, which encourages me so much. 3月9日 The long journey is ending soon. Hello! ^_^
I'm so excited to take an IELTS test again by tomorrow. This time I've expected to pass every part, especially the writing tasks. Indeed, I've not considered myself that my writing skills are the weakest point because I believe that I have the biggest problems in speaking instead. Thanks God, however, I finally found the grammatical errors are very common. Moreover, In writing task 1, which deals with describing the graphs or information provided in the table, is the most difficult to write about it. I could not understand at all or even interprete the distinctive feature. For example, the two pie charts below show changes in world population by region between 1900 and 2000. Write a report for a lecturer describing the information in these charts. (I could not show you the charts, I'm sorry about that. ^_^) You may think that interpreting or writing the information is quite easy, but it's a tough task because you are restricted to spend no longer than 20 mins with the minimum 150 words.
Oh! I suppose that you may feel stressed. Let me change the topic. ^_^ By the time I finish the test, I'll be definitely happy. Nevertheless, I'm supposed to study hard. Study in the tertiary education level is not easy to deal with, in particular, the English speaking environment. My ex-classmates, for instance, said that they have at least three individual assignments from three subjects and two more for group work. Each of the report must be minimum in 3,000 words in lenght, with 7 references from textbooks only. If you want to refer in the websites, you are allowed no more than 2 references. In addition, you have to take your responsibility to read two chapters before you go to the lectures; otherwise, you'll not understand at all. ^_^ It should be reasonable for the overseas students who are familiar with this education system, but it is very hard for me.
While you are imaging about my story, I just feel that I should not get frightened before I begin my study. Thanks to God's grace, I must put my hope in Him, continuing to improve all of my skills. If any one of us really needs to acquire English, you can start it now. These lists below are the lessons in which I've learnt from the English school.
1. Listening skills
a. You should become accustomed to native's accent. Australian, for example, speak quite fast and lots of colloquial languages, so you should listen to their accents via the radio, such as www.bbc.co.uk (British news) (choose study English) and www.abc.net.au/rn, where you can download the podcasts into your mp3 player.
b. Note taking is beneficial for whom really want to develop. From the transcript, for example, you may ask your friends to delete some words, you then fill the gap when you listen to.
c. Watch live news from the website or television is the pretty good idea too.
d. Some friends recommend me to listen to the music which you also learn vocabularies, pronunciation and idiomatic expressions. I couldn't agree more.
Well, I'm afraid the time is up, so I'll come back to tell you later.
May God bless you all,
chim
